A trained security dog and handler can provide a highly visible deterrent across exposed, isolated or repeatedly targeted sites. The team can patrol agreed areas, observe access points, report incidents and support an organised site-security plan.
The dog is part of a professionally handled security resource. It is not deployed simply to intimidate people and does not give the handler or client any additional enforcement power.

We need a clear site brief
Tell us the location, operating hours, current occupation, known threats, public access, other animals, site hazards and the result you need. This allows the proposed coverage, handler requirements and safe patrol areas to be assessed.

- The team must operate within the client’s lawful authority and agreed site boundary.
- Dogs must not be used as a punishment or to compel compliance.
- Public access, children, animals and vulnerable people require specific risk controls.
- A dog team complements—not replaces—physical security and an appropriate incident plan.

Guard Dogs Act requirements
Where a guard dog is used at premises, the Guard Dogs Act 1975 requires a capable handler to be present and the dog to remain under the handler’s control, unless it is secured so that it cannot go freely about the premises.
The Act also requires a warning notice to be clearly displayed at each entrance to premises where a guard dog is being used.

Specialist detection work is a separate service
Explosives detection, drug detection and search-and-rescue work require specialist dog-and-handler training, insurance and deployment procedures. They should not be assumed to form part of a general-purpose security dog instruction. Availability must be specifically confirmed before being advertised or contracted.

What sites can K9 security dog handlers protect?
Subject to assessment, teams may cover vacant commercial premises, warehouses, construction sites, industrial property, open land and sites requiring protection after a possession or clearance operation.
Do security dog handlers need an SIA licence?
Where contracted work involves a licensable security activity, the handler needs the appropriate SIA licence. The correct licence depends on the work being undertaken, not simply the presence of a dog.
Can a guard dog be left to roam a site alone?
The Guard Dogs Act 1975 requires a capable handler to be present and the dog to be under control, unless the dog is secured so that it cannot go freely about the premises.
Are guard dog warning signs required?
